How Women Rise: Interview with Sally Helgesen

In 2018, I was at a client site facilitating a conversation between an emerging, high potential leader and her boss. We were talking all about the emerging leader's ongoing development + identifying specific education and experiences that would be valuable resources for her learning.

As my client discussed some habits that were holding her back, her boss recommended a new book called How Women Rise: Break the 12 Habits Holding You Back from Your Next Raise, Promotion, or Job by Sally Helgesen and Marshall Goldsmith.

She raved about the book, its valuable content and practical application, and encouraged her direct report to buy/read it immediately.

Of course, I did the same, and ever since, I have been following Sally's work. As I've followed along, I've been consistently impressed with how Sally engages with her audience.

She is incredibly generous, responsive, and active in this space.

Sally is a premier expert on women's leadership, a best-selling author, speaker, and leadership coach. For over 30 years, her mission has been to help women recognize, articulate and act on their greatest strengths (a mission that aligns with my own for the world -- talk about synergy!).

In many ways, Sally has become a role model for me in the work that she has, and continues, to do. As such, I decided to reach out (via LinkedIn) to ask if I could interview her for this blog, and she graciously agreed!

In the interview below, we discuss all sorts of topics -- from how Sally launched her career, to cultural differences she has observed in traveling and speaking on this topic, to the value of focusing on "meritocracy" in our organizations. The interview is chock full of practical advice, guidance, and stories that should help us all continue to develop.

See the full video below. If you enjoy it, please share with those who may benefit.

Together, we rise!

Stefanie
